ABS (3D Printing)
FDM-grade ABS for strong, heat-resistant 3D printed parts. Good post-processing with acetone vapor smoothing for improved surface finish.
About ABS (3D Printing)
ABS for FDM 3D printing delivers strong, heat-resistant parts with good impact toughness. It is one of the original FDM materials and remains popular for functional prototypes, jigs, and fixtures that need to withstand moderate mechanical loads and temperatures up to 98°C.
FabRapid prints ABS on enclosed, heated-chamber FDM systems to prevent warping and delamination — the primary challenges with ABS printing. Proper temperature management is critical for dimensional accuracy.
ABS prints can be post-processed with acetone vapor smoothing to achieve smooth, near-injection-molded surfaces. This makes ABS ideal for prototypes that need to match production part appearance.

Common Applications
Design Guidelines for ABS (3D Printing)
Design for minimal warping — avoid large flat surfaces; add fillets and rounds
Acetone vapor smoothing can achieve near-injection-molded surface quality on ABS prints
Minimum wall thickness: 1.2 mm for standard FDM printing
Orient parts to minimize overhangs — ABS overhangs require supports that leave marks
ABS (3D Printing) FAQ
ABS offers better heat resistance (98°C vs 70°C HDT), is vapor-smoothable for excellent surfaces, and has better post-processing options. PETG is easier to print (less warping), has better chemical resistance, and offers semi-transparency. Choose ABS for heat resistance and smooth finishes; PETG for ease of printing and chemical resistance.
