About PLA

PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a biodegradable thermoplastic derived from renewable resources (corn starch, sugarcane). It is the easiest FDM material to print, offering excellent surface quality, dimensional accuracy, and a wide range of available colors.

FabRapid prints PLA for concept models, visual prototypes, architectural models, and design verification. PLA parts look professional and are suitable for non-functional display purposes, but should not be used for structural, mechanical, or outdoor applications due to limited temperature resistance (HDT 52°C) and brittleness.

PLA is environmentally friendly and can be composted in industrial facilities. However, it is not biodegradable in home composting conditions or normal landfill environments.

Design Guidelines for PLA

1

PLA is ideal for visual prototypes — take advantage of its excellent surface quality

2

Avoid applications above 50°C — PLA softens and deforms near its glass transition temperature

3

Minimum wall thickness: 1.0 mm for standard FDM printing

4

PLA is brittle — not suitable for snap-fits, living hinges, or impact-prone applications

PLA FAQ

PLA has decent tensile strength (50 MPa) but is brittle with low elongation (6%). It is not suitable for functional parts that experience impact, sustained load, or temperatures above 50°C. For functional FDM parts, use ABS, PETG, or nylon instead.

PLA itself is food-safe. However, FDM-printed PLA parts have microscopic layer lines that trap bacteria and are difficult to clean. For food-contact 3D printing, use food-safe PETG with appropriate nozzle and build surface materials.
