ASA
UV-resistant thermoplastic with similar mechanical properties to ABS. ASA is ideal for outdoor applications where weathering and UV exposure are concerns.
About ASA
ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) is the outdoor-rated version of ABS. It maintains the same mechanical properties as ABS while offering 10× better UV resistance and weatherability. ASA parts maintain their color, gloss, and mechanical properties through years of outdoor sun exposure.
FabRapid prints ASA for outdoor enclosures, automotive exterior parts, garden tools, and signage. ASA requires similar print conditions to ABS (heated bed, enclosed chamber) but does not yellow or become brittle with UV exposure.
ASA is the recommended material for any 3D printed part that will be permanently installed outdoors or exposed to sunlight.

Compatible Manufacturing Processes
ASA can be processed using these manufacturing methods.
Available Surface Finishes
Surface treatments compatible with ASA.
Common Applications
Design Guidelines for ASA
Print ASA in an enclosed, heated chamber to prevent warping (same as ABS)
Minimum wall thickness: 1.2 mm for standard FDM printing
ASA has excellent paint adhesion — post-paint for exact color matching on outdoor parts
For maximum UV resistance, orient the most exposed surface as the top layer (smooth)
ASA FAQ
ASA maintains its mechanical properties and color for 7-10+ years of outdoor exposure in most climates. It was originally developed by BASF for automotive exterior trim that must withstand years of sun, rain, and temperature cycling. It significantly outperforms ABS and PLA outdoors.
