About Resin (SLA/DLP)

Photopolymer resins enable the highest resolution and smoothest surfaces of any 3D printing technology. SLA (Stereolithography) and DLP (Digital Light Processing) use UV light to cure liquid resin layer by layer, achieving details as fine as 25 µm.

FabRapid offers multiple resin formulations: standard (general prototyping), tough (ABS-like properties), flexible (rubber-like), clear (transparent), castable (jewelry/dental), and high-temperature (heat-resistant). Each formulation is optimized for specific applications.

Resin parts are ideal for visual prototypes, master patterns for urethane casting, dental and surgical models, jewelry casting patterns, and any application requiring exceptional surface finish and fine detail.

Design Guidelines for Resin (SLA/DLP)

1

Layer orientation affects surface quality — orient critical surfaces to avoid stair-stepping

2

Support structures leave marks — orient parts to place supports on non-cosmetic surfaces

3

Minimum feature size: 0.1 mm for walls, 0.5 mm for unsupported features

4

Hollow parts must have drain holes (≥ 2 mm) to remove uncured resin from interior

Resin (SLA/DLP) FAQ

Standard resins are brittle and not suitable for functional parts. Tough resin formulations (ABS-like) offer improved impact resistance and are suitable for light functional use. For truly functional parts, consider SLS/MJF nylon or CNC machining instead.

Resin parts can yellow and become brittle with prolonged UV exposure if not fully post-cured. Proper post-curing (UV + heat) stabilizes the material. For outdoor applications, UV-stable resin formulations are available but still have limited UV resistance compared to engineering thermoplastics.
